Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
