Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, one notices a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
