Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications should be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and you become starving," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
