Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.

No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
